The general role of the HDD (Horizontal Directional Drill) Technician I – Fiber Optics is to be responsible for all duties associated with and related to the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of directional drills as well as potholing, installing conduit, pulling cable, installing handholes, pedestals and marker posts.
This position will be expected to be involved with all drilling, conduit installation, cable pulling, and other installation and network repair work as required.
Other primary duties are to perform general site preparation, restoration, and right-of-way maintenance duties as well as perform preventative maintenance and inspections on equipment.
This individual understands each product and supports the improvement of operational efficiency and must be comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces.
The HDD Technician I reports to the Project Manager - Fiber Optics and will work primarily out of their assigned location.

Perform preventative maintenance and inspections on equipment and tools Assist with performing minor field repairs on equipment Assist with locating and guiding the drill head Assist with maintaining water tanks and associated water line connections to support drilling operations Assist with worksite housekeeping duties and equipment inspections Provide roadway flagging support for the operation to include obtaining Flagger Certification Assist with work site restoration Assist in the completion of documentation to include record-keeping, billing, and inventory, etc.
Learn to recognize general safety hazards and electrical-specific hazards Assist with marking underground proposed design route with respect to utilities and underground systems Learn to complete daily close of business (COB) reports for customers Assist with collecting information to make utility locate requests Other Duties This job posting is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities that are required for this position.

Qualifications: No prior experience necessary but horizontal directional drilling experience is preferred Valid Driver’s License is required, CDL A preferred Experience with bucket truck, cable puller, and reel stands preferred Experience operating small equipment preferred (i.
e.
, forklift, bobcat, telehandler, skid steer, etc.
) Basic knowledge of earth moving/excavation equipment preferred General construction and/or flagging experience preferred Comfortable working in confined spaces Experience and knowledge of underground utility installations preferred Ability to read, interpret, and follow OSP (outside plant) design drawings and job specifications preferred Ability to work effectively under minimal supervision Possess strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to maintain professionalism Compute basic math calculations and take measurements Familiar with Microsoft Software such as Outlook, Word, and Excel Working Conditions Walk / use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls / reach with hands and arms / climb ladders and stairs / crawl / kneel Work indoors, outdoors, and underground in various weather conditions Able to work in confined spaces Able to walk long distances Able to lift up to 65 pounds without assistance Additional Eligibility Qualifications This position requires the completion of a thorough background and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
