*JOB PURPOSE*
Valley School’s ELA curriculum focuses on developing strong readers, writers, and critical thinkers and uses Columbia’s Teacher’s College Reading and Writing Projects as the foundation of our instructional model.
The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic individual who has demonstrated a passion for reading, writing, and teaching that builds interest in excitement for the content.
*DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES*
• Teach five middle school (Grades 5-6) ELA classes with at least three preparations, along with grade-level advising.
• Collaborate with colleagues to develop the ELA curriculum and enhance instructional practices and strategies.
• Engage students in a variety of texts to develop their reading and writing skills with depth and curiosity.
• Support students with their development of foundational skills in grammar and vocabulary and with critical thinking skills in analyzing texts.
• Regularly assess students’ progress by observing and evaluating performance and development of skills and provide appropriate and timely feedback to students and families.
• Demonstrate a growth mindset and commitment to professional growth as an ELA teacher.
• Identify and respond to the individual students learning differences and create enrichment opportunities; differentiate instruction to meet the needs of various learners.
• Participate collaboratively and professionally with other faculty and staff to promote the general well-being of the school community in a manner that supports and promotes the Mission and Core Values of Valley School.
• Attend faculty meetings and fulfill other faculty obligations.
• Participate in the life of the school, including scheduled extra duties, school-related conferences, training, committee work, and where possible, attending after-hours events that reflect a commitment to the success of the school and the development of the whole child.
*EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE*
• Teaching Certification in Middle-Level ELA preferred
• Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree
• Demonstrated teaching experience in a classroom setting
• Exhibits effective written and oral communication skills
• Passion for working and engaging with energetic Middle School students
